If you’ve read any of the books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, or the first book in the Heroes of Olympus series, The Lost Hero; you have a pretty good idea of what to expect from The Son of Neptune. If you haven’t read them, let me just tell you; go do it right now. Rick Riordan is, in my opinion, the American equivalent of J.K. Rowling; a really fantastic author of middle grade books who knows how to engage an audience of all ages.

If you haven’t read the other books though, here’s what you need to know: The gods of Ancient Greece are real and rule from their current home in New York City. They have numerous half-blood children called demigods who train to be heroes at Camp Half-Blood on Long Island. There are quests and adventures and all kinds of excitement with monsters of all sorts. In the first book of the new series, The Lost Hero, we find out that the gods have Roman aspects, meaning they slightly alter their personalities to reflect the Roman ideas of the gods. And guess what? The Roman gods have children too. In California, a camp very similar to Camp Half-Blood trains heroes as well; neither knowing that the other exists. Now Jason Grace (son of Jupiter) and Percy Jackson (son of Poseidon) have been switched in a plot to introduce the two camps as an effort to win perhaps the biggest battle for the world that will ever take place.

The Son of Neptune starts off with Percy Jackson on the run, newly awakened from a god-induced sleep meant to keep him out of the way and erase his memories. He makes his way to Camp Jupiter, the Roman demigod training grounds. Once there, he struggles to fit in a place that seems so much like home but isn’t quite right. He makes new friends in Frank Zhang and Hazel Levesque, loners who are trying to make names for themselves against the odds. Together they discover more about themselves and the growing evil that is threatening to end the world as we know it. A gripping story that makes you laugh while leaving you begging for more, The Son of Neptune is a very worthy read.

I definitely recommend going to rickriordan.com; it’s a fun way to find out more about the world of the books!
