Now a fully trained unicorn hunter, Astrid Llewelyn is learning that she can’t solve all her problems with a bow and arrow. Her boyfriend has left Rome, the Cloisters is in dire financial straits, her best friend’s powers are mysteriously disintegrating, and her hope of becoming a scientist seems to be nothing but an impossible dream.

So when she’s given the opportunity to leave the Cloisters and use her skills as part of a scientific quest to discover the Remedy, Astrid leaps at the chance. Finally, she can have exactly what she wants—or can she? At Gordian headquarters deep in France, Astrid begins to question everything she had believed: her love for Giovanni, her loyalty to the Cloisters, and—most of all—her duty as a hunter. Should Astrid be saving the world from killer unicorns or saving unicorns from the world?

I love the concept of this series.

I just can't stand the way it's written.

I had the same problem with Ascendant that I did with Rampant. I felt, about halfway through the book, that the scenes were squished together; everything came together really quickly. Did I think the plot was great? Hells yeah!

But something about Diana's writing style just doesn't work for me. I know I'll read the third one in the series - I need to know what happens to these unicorns; I love them - but the characters don't do anything for me. I feel like I should adore Astrid, but I can't. I liked her best when she was trying to deal with her head injury, but even then, I just couldn't deal.

Also, I hated where the Remedy came from. It made for a great plot twist, but... no.

Final Comments: I'll read the rest because I love the unicorns. They're worth reading for. The rest... not so much.
